Music
Despite being an avid music listener from a young age, I didn’t pick up an instrument until life hit me in the face with a ukulele and guitar in my mid-20s. While going through a time of intense self-honesty and turmoil, I found both instruments provided a release for internal pressure that had been stuck and building for decades.
Writing my own songs also became an essential outlet for energy that had nowhere to go for a long time. After a few months of learning the ukulele, I moved on to guitar and spent the next 2 ½ years developing technique and writing songs. Eventually, chronic physical pain from past injuries and surgeries became too much to tolerate while playing guitar. I didn’t want to stop making music, so I went back to the ukulele and was able to endure the smaller frets and more flexible strings.
Going back to the ukulele helped me realize I had moved on from it way too quickly. Having thought of it mainly as a happy island instrument, I discovered it could hold even the heaviest and deepest of my pain and emotions. I already knew words could do that, and now I’m learning how much the voice can as well.
I’m very close to being pain-free enough to share my songs, which mostly will be posted on YouTube. Once they’re up, a few of them will also be featured below on this page.
